PREP ROUNDUP: Phoenix trio captures district titles

KLAMATH FALLS — Phoenix wrestling team seniors and No. 1 seeds Ezra DeLuca, Jacky Hawkins and Elijah Santana all captured championship titles in their respective divisions Saturday, helping the Pirates place third in the final day of the Class 4A District 3 championships at Mazama High School.

In the 113-pound weight class, DeLuca pinned Hidden Valley’s Hunter Lucas in 3 minutes, 14 seconds, while Hawkins topped Mazama’s Kaden Wood in 3:56 at 138 and Santana got the best of North Valley’s Eli Colas in 6:00 at 160.

Also making the finals were 152-pounder Mike Walker and 220-pounder Ryan Brumble of Phoenix, but each had to settle for second place. Marshfield’s Tandy Martin pinned Walker in 1:16 while Brumble was edged by Hidden Valley’s Joseph Carrion, 3-0.

Also for the Pirates, Elijah Galatioto finished in third place at 182 pounds while Mateo Lopez (145) settled for fourth.

As a team, Phoenix finished in third place with 253.5 points behind only Mazama (291) and Hidden Valley (289).

Swimming

MWL DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Ashand, Crater’s Marcus Reyes-Gentry qualified for the Class 5A state meet in two separate events

Reyes-Gentry, who was the Comets’ lone state qualifier, earned the 500 freestyle title by nearly 15 seconds, finishing in 4 minutes, 45.03 seconds to Springfield runner-up Nathan Gordy (5:00.25). Reyes-Gentry also captured the 100 backstroke title in 52.23.

Coming in second to Reyes-Gentry in the 100 backstroke was Ashland’s Chris Frownfelter. Frownfelter, who came away with a pair of second-place finishes, timed 54.46.

Frownfelter was also runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 48.3. He was followed by teammate Baylor Wiggins and his third-place time of 50.69.

4A/3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 4 CHAMPIONSHIPS: At North Bend, as one of four St. Mary’s swimmers to secure qualifying spots in the Class 4A state meet, Ahnyka Lahmann captured two berths by winning the girls 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly in the district championships at North Bend High School.

Lahmann timed 2 minutes, 28.13 seconds in the 200 IM and 1:05.29 in the 100 backstroke. First place earns swimmers automatic bids at state, while the remaining open lanes for each event will be filled by the next fastest times from all district meets from around the state.

Ivy Frisbee also took a top spot for the Crusader girls by winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.92.

On the boys side, St. Mary’s Jasper Zhu and Asa Frisbee both claimed lanes in the state meet with their winning times. Zhu won the 100 freestyle (49.05) while Frisbee was victorious in the 100 backstroke (59.09).

Zhu also placed second in the 50 freestyle (22.8) and Asa Frisbee nabbed second in the 500 freestyle (5:10.38). The St. Mary’s boys 400 freestyle relay team took second place (3:37.8) and the 200 freestyle relayers nabbed third (1:39.18).

Cascade Christian’s Braedon Scaglione placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.38) while Phoenix’s Alec Shepherd turned in a pair of third-place finishes with a 23.24 time in the 50 free to go with his 50.17 time in the 100 free.

The St. Mary’s girls 200 medley relay team finished second (2:04.41) and the 400 freestyle relay team took third (4:25.41).
