Prep Soccer: Calhoun's 3 goals lift South

Junior midfielder Kam Calhoun scored three goals, including one on a long-range play late in the contest, to lead South Medford to a 4-1 Southwest Conference boys soccer victory over visiting Grants Pass Tuesday.

The Panthers (5-1-3, 3-1-2 SWC) took a 2-0 halftime lead and pushed it to 3-0 before the Cavemen scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Cade Anderson did the honors for Grants Pass (1-7-1, 1-5).

Calhoun then finished it off in the 75th when he controlled about a 70-yard boot by Calvin Whitley and beat the goalie with a shot to the far post.

Peyton Terry put South Medford on the scoreboard in the seventh minute following a throw-in from Angus Stringer. Calhoun scored a minute before halftime on another Stringer assist.

Calhoun’s other goal was unassisted, coming in the 45th from the right side.

NORTH MEDFOD 2, SHELDON 0: At Eugene, Caleb Forte scored unassisted goals in each half and North Medford turned in a sterling defensive effort for the Southwest Conference win.

The Black Tornado (4-3-1, 4-1-1 SWC) defensive charge was led by junior Joel Dawson and sophomore Braden Byrd.

Forte scored first in the 10th minute, dribbling past two defenders, then beating the goalie.

In the 68th minute, he tallied an insurance goal after pickpocketing a defender.

Sheldon is 0-6-3 and 0-4-1.

ASHLAND 3, EAGLE POINT 2: At Eagle Point, sophomore Carson Pindell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 60th minute as Ashland maintained its spot atop the Midwestern League standings.

Pindell slotted home a pass from freshman Davidson Graham into the bottom-left corner of the goal to break the 2-all tie. It was his first score of the season.

The Grizzlies (5-2-2, 3-0-1 MWL) never trailed in the game after Scott Gustafson scored the first of his two first-half goals in the 11th minute.

Eagle Point (5-2-2, 1-1-2) tied the game midway through the first half on a header by Jaydyn Budrow, but Gustafson put the Grizzlies back in front right before halftime with a nice chipper goal over the Eagles’ goalkeeper.

SOUTH MEDFORD 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Grants Pass, Whitney Winans drove in South Medford’s first two goals and assisted on its third as the Panthers won their fourth straight Southwest Conference game.

Winans scored in the 24th minute and again eight minutes into the second half on a give-and-go from Heather Ramirez. Less than a minute later, Winans returned the favor by setting up Ramirez’s goal that put the Panthers (5-5, 4-2 SWC) up 3-0.

Panthers’ center back Baylee Smith and outside left back Rylie Michael kept Grants Pass (6-3-1, 3-3) at bay by reading plays and getting the ball out of South Medford territory.

SHELDON 4, NORTH MEDFORD 0: North Medford fell behind 3-0 in the first half of the home Southwest Conference match and league front-runner Sheldon held serve in the second half.

North Medford dropped to 1-5-3 overall and 1-4-1 in the SWC. Sheldon is 7-2-1 and 4-1-1.
