Prep hoops roundup: St. Mary's boys stumble

SUTHERLIN — Tasked with trying to deal the Far West League’s top team its first loss in league play, the St. Mary’s boys basketball team’s chances looked pretty good on the road with a slim lead after the first period was over.

From there, however, the Crusaders went ice cold from the floor, enabling host Sutherlin to take control and keep its FWL record unblemished with a 44-27 victory over St. Mary’s on Friday.

The Crusaders (9-10, 3-2 FWL), who shot just 28 percent from the field, grabbed a 12-11 lead after the first quarter but were outscored 33-15 the rest of the way.

St. Mary’s received eight points, eight blocks and five rebounds from Tre Foster, and nine points, six boards and a pair of blocks from Francis Okeyia.

Sutherlin improved to 16-4 overall and 5-0 in FWL play.

KLAMATH UNION 67, PHOENIX 60: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix junior guard Nico Ortega drilled seven 3-pointers on his way to 22 points, but Klamath Union’s Zane Napoli-Sorg hit six 3-pointers and led the Pelicans to the Skyline Conference victory.

Ethan Hutsell added 17 points and Braeden Watts nine for the Pirates (9-9, 0-4 Skyline).

Klamath Union improved to 7-6 overall, 2-1 in Skyline play.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 57, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 56: Layne Collom scored 16 points, including 13 in the first half, and Kiegan Schaan hit a turnaround jumper with 45 seconds left to give the Challengers the lead for good in a Far West League thriller at Cascade Christian High School.

Cascade Christian (5-14, 3-2 FWL) fought back from a 51-47 deficit with two minutes to go after leading most of the way. After Schaan’s clutch 12-footer and a Challenger stop, Donminic Lewis, who scored 12 points, hit two free throws with nine seconds left to give the Challengers a four-point cushion. Brookings-Harbor (9-7, 3-2) hit a quick 3 at the other end, but the Challengers let time expire before inbounding.

Evan Fronckowiak scored 13 points and Logan Holler 12 to lead the Bruins, who hit a buzzer-beater at the end of every quarter.

LOST RIVER 69, ROGUE RIVER 55: At Rogue River, senior guard Tyler Walsh scored 17 points to lead three Rogue River players in double figures during a Southern Cascade League home loss.

Diego Agosto and Derek Nelson tallied 10 points each for the Chieftains (7-9, 1-5 SCL).

Lost River (11-7, 5-2) got out to a 15-6 first quarter lead and built a 32-14 halftime margin.

TRIAD 42, PROSPECT 24: At Klamath Falls, Prospect showed much improvement since losing to Class 1A top-ranked Triad by 30 points earlier in the season.

Senior guard Jordan Royce scored eight points to lead Prospect (1-16, 0-9 MVL) and freshman post Logan Gordon pulled down 13 rebounds.

Undefeated Triad (16-0, 10-0) built a 21-6 halftime lead.

KLAMATH UNION 49, KLAMATH UNION 47, OT: At Klamath Falls, Klamath Union rallied in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime and then knocked down the go-ahead shot with three seconds left to secure the Skyline Conference victory.

Phoenix (6-12, 0-4 Skyline) committed a few costly turnovers in the final minutes of regulation that allowed the Pelicans to knot the score 44-all with eight seconds remaining. With the clock winding down in overtime and Phoenix leading 47-46, Klamath Union’s Katherine Bustamante sank the game-winning 3-pointer.

Sophomore post Josie Bolstad led all scores with 18 points to go with five rebounds and four steals for the Pirates, and fellow sophomore post Delani Parent turned in 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Maggie Carrillo chipped in eight points and four steals for the Pirates, who collected 15 steals and created 21 turnovers but had 20 miscues of their own.

SUTHERLIN 55, ST. MARY’S 35: At Sutherlin, following a quick start, St. Mary’s cooled off while enduring a pair of second-half scoring droughts that lasted nearly four minutes apiece, allowing Sutherlin to move out in front and pull away in the Far West League contest.

Emma Bennion led all scorers with 16 points for the Crusaders (9-7, 2-3 FWL), who also picked up 10 points from Ibixica Alvarez.

The Bulldogs (9-10, 3-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Abigail Masterfield’s 15 points.

LOST RIVER 50, ROGUE RIVER 42: At Rogue River, sophomore guard Jonwyn Ayers scored 14 points for Rogue River in the Southern Cascade League loss.

The Chieftains (11-7, 4-3 SCL) kept the game close, trailing only 33-31 entering the fourth quarter against league-leading Lost River (12-6, 8-0).

Jesse Langfield added 10 points and Alyssa Sizemore chipped in eight for Rogue River.
