PREP BASKETBALL: South girls tumble

CONCORD, Calif. — South Medford got off to a good start but lost traction in suffering a 58-49 loss to Valencia of Placentia, California, in the opening round of the Emerald backet at the West Coast Jamboree girls basketball tournament at Ygnacio High School Thursday.

The Panthers led by three points after the opening period before getting outscored 34-19 in the second and third quarters.

“We moved the ball and weren’t turning it over,” said South Medford coach Tom Cole. “We played a terrible second and third quarter. We didn’t play very hard and struggled to get into an offensive rhythm.”

South had 14 turnovers and won the battle of the boards, 31-30.

Ula Chamberlin paced the Panther attack with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Bella Pedrojett added 11 points.

South Medford’s Shakia Teague-Perry contributed eight points, six rebounds and three blocks, and Toni Coleman pulled down eight rebounds.

“Valencia started hot in the third quarter,” said Cole. “We continued to battle back but couldn’t get over the hump. We didn’t have the consistent effort needed to win basketball games like this.”
