Pirates go deep in sweep of Knights

MERLIN — Phoenix softball teammates Amanda Skaff and Meranda Zanni have enjoyed monitoring each other's home run count this season. Their competition to see who can get more is a friendly one, but the damage they've caused collectively has been anything but fun for opponents.

Just ask North Valley.

Zanni belted a pair of two-run homers on the day and Skaff crushed a solo shot in Game 2 as the Pirates swept the Knights, 7-2 and 9-5, at North Valley High.

Zanni and Skaff both have eight home runs on the year.

Zanni launched a homer in the opener and tossed a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk. The game was tied at 2 before Bailee Tally's sharp single to left field drove in a run and Alyssa Wallack's sacrifice fly scored Makayla Scoggins in the top of the fifth inning. Zanni added her shot an inning later.

'We just opened up and said we want to pull away," Phoenix head coach Jason Zanni said.

Bailee Tally was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases, Skaff 2-for-3 and Zanni 2-for-4 in Game 1. Kasey Werner finished 2-for-4 and Kady Kantola hit a solo homer for North Valley (9-12, 2-6 Sky).

In Game 2, Zanni hit her home run in the fifth and Skaff added a solo shot in the seventh. Baylee Toney added a two-run homer in the second inning.

Delanie Tally finished 3-for-4, Wallack 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, Skaff 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and Zanni 2-for-4 for the Pirates (14-4, 5-2).

Mikayla Dart went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Werner 2-for-4 with three runs for the Knights.

Zanni allowed nine hits and two walks and fanned four to improve to 10-3 in the second contest, when Phoenix recorded eight stolen bases on nine attempts.
