Phoenix routs Mazama in regular-season finale

TALENT — Phoenix had the Skyline Conference boys soccer No. 2 spot locked up entering the regular-season finale against Mazama Thursday, but the Pirates didn't take anything for granted.

Phoenix scored early and often in a 6-2 victory at Hagler-James Park.

It was the Pirates' fifth victory in their last six games. Phoenix (9-4, 7-3 Sky) is scheduled to host the Far West League No. 3 team in Class 4A play-in game next week.

Phoenix scored four unanswered goals in the first 17 minutes.

"We were definitely motivated," said Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner. "We're looking forward to the playoffs and didn't want to finish league play lackadaisically."

Junior outside halfback James Castillo helped get the Pirates to a successful start. Castillo, who had been nursing an injury, assisted on the their first three goals, then scored to open the second half.

"(Castillo) got after it," said Flenner. "He decided today was going to be his day."

Jalisco Macias opened the scoring in the third minute, followed three minutes later by Hunter Sunitsch. Then David Espana netted a pair of goals, with Macias assisting on the second.

Marco Nuno's goal off a corner kick at the 40th minute sent Mazama into halftime trailing 4-1.

Castillo scored off a Macias assist in the first minute of the second period, and Sunitsch added the Pirates' final goal unassisted in the eighth minute.

Josh Hunsinger accounted for Mazama's second goal.

"We controlled the ball and we controlled the pitch," said Flenner. "We did a great job on possession."

HIDDEN VALLEY 2, KLAMATH UNION 0 — Skyline champion Hidden Valley, missing three starters to injury, needed two second-half goals, and junior goalkeeper Chris Stucke had five saves at U.S. Cellular Park.

Jason Kellogg scored on a direct kick from about 25 yards in the 63rd minute to provide the Mustangs with the winning goal.

Hidden Valley received an insurance goal in the 78th minute by Kevin Payne off a Caleb Aldstadt assist.

The Mustangs (13-1, 9-1 Sky) host the Far West League No. 4 team in a state play-in game next Thursday.

NORTH VALLEY 2, HENLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, North Valley secured the No. 3 spot in the Skyline Conference and will travel for a state play-in game next week.

The Knights (7-6-1, 5-5 Sky), got goals from Isaiah McLittle in the 11th minute, assisted by Zane Willing, and from Cody Goins in the 77th minute, assisted by Josh Cowell, in defeating Henley.

Goalie Ryan Clarkin made seven saves to preserve the shutout.

North Valley visits either Coquille or North Bend next Thursday.


MAZAMA 9, PHOENIX 0 — At Klamath Falls, Mazama (9-1 Sky) got three goals from Tiffany Taylor and a goal and three assists from Maria Dominguez in the Skyline Conference rout.

Phoenix ended the season 0-14 and 0-10.

HIDDEN VALLEY 2, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Rachelle Flick scored in the 14th minute and Ashley Hart in the 39th minute to down win the Skyline contest.

Hidden Valley, co-champion with Mazama at 9-1 in the Skyline, is 12-2 overall. The league leaders play off at 6 p.m. Monday at U.S. Cellular Community Park to determine state seeding.

HENLEY 5, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Merlin, Henley claimed third place in the Skyline with the win, while North Valley ended up in fifth place.
