Phoenix freshman Martinez named Skyline POY

Freshman Victor Martinez was named player of the year, coach Dennis Flenner was a co-head coach of the year and Phoenix led the league with seven all-stars as the Pirates dominated Skyline Conference boys soccer all-league voting.

The Skyline Conference-champion Pirates, who suffered their first loss in the Class 4A state semifinals, also had two honorable mentions on the list, which is assembled through a vote by the league’s six head coaches.

Martinez, a forward who helped Phoenix score a league-high 47 goals, was the only freshman to make the first or second team and was one of four Pirates to take home first-team honors. He scored 17 goals, including game-winners against Mazama, Marist and North Valley, and also dished out two assists.

Phoenix’s other first-teamers were senior forward Bryson Flenner, junior midfielder Randy Rodriguez and senior goalkeeper Moises Rivera. Flenner had 13 goals and three assists, Rodriguez two goals and 10 assists and Rivera had 10 shutouts and never allowed more than one goal in a game.

Earning second-team nods for the Pirates were senior defender Joe Navas, sophomore defender Dan Martinez and senior defender Johnny Esquivel. Ty Clayton and Cornelio Carrera-Flores were the Pirates’ honorable mentions.

Dennis Flenner shared the coach of the year award with Mazama’s Mike Hedlund and North Valley’s Tyler Goens.
