Phoenix father and son awarded top Skyline honors

The football coaches of the Skyline Conference recently selected Phoenix High senior quarterback Javan Gail as the conference’s co-offensive player of the year and his father, Jered Gail, as co-coach of the year.

The Gails led Phoenix to a second-place finish in the conference with a 4-1 league record, equal to first-place Mazama and third-place Henley, which saw senior quarterback Kyle Hadwick share offensive player of the year honors with Javan Gail and coach Alex Stork share coach of the year honors with Jered Gail.

Javan Gail led the Pirates in total yards in both rushing and passing, averaging 257.9 yards per game overall, and also scoring, compiling 29 touchdowns. He passed for 2108 yards, completing 56.6 percent of his attempts, while throwing 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a passer rating of 143.3. He rushed for 471 yards, averaging 5.4 yards per carry, and 10 touchdowns.

Two Phoenix seniors were picked for the all-Skyline first team on both sides of the ball: Ismael DeLaTorre (offensive line and defensive line) and Chase Courtney (receiver and defensive back).

Phoenix seniors Jonathan Halligan (tight end) and Mason Firestone (linebacker) joined Gail, DeLaTorre and Courtney as first team selections.

Defensive player of the year went to Logan Kappas, a senior lineman from Henley.
