Phoenix advances eight wrestlers to state tourney

SUTHERLIN — Saturday couldn't have gone much better for Phoenix wrestling coach John Farmer, who witnessed his team pull together and advance eight of its 10 wrestlers to next week's Class 4A state tournament.

The Pirates had to settle for second place in the District 3 Regional Championships after Henley ran away with the title by scoring 340 points at Sutherlin High, but that was of little concern to Farmer.

"Getting eight of 10 through was pretty huge," said the coach. "We were a small team this year so a majority of our kids are going to state and that's a pretty good accomplishment."

Eleazar De Luca, at 140 pounds, won the lone regional title for Phoenix, and teammates Austyn Snow (119) and Riley Dodd (130) placed second.

Also advancing for the Pirates were third-place finishers Braden Vega (119), Caleb Glanz (125) and Tylor Hudson (189) and fourth-place finishers Nick Renfro (125) and Robert Amstutz (160).

Phoenix nearly made it a clean sweep, but Kyle Bradfield got caught and was pinned after taking the lead in a consolation match at 135 to place fifth, and Austin Wolff (145) fell short in an overtime loss that left him to settle for fifth. The top four wrestlers at each weight class advanced to the state tourney.

"Wolff losing was kind of the heartbreaker," said Farmer of the senior, who lost 9-7 in overtime to Hidden Valley's Josh Marshall. "He's been our team captain and leader all year. He's a real go-getter, and he went after it and tied the match up. But in overtime, he went in for a shot and slipped and the other kid got the takedown."

De Luca was dominant in claiming the title at 140, while Dodd suffered a tough 12-11 loss to North Valley's James Bowers in the finals. Snow was caught early but battled back in a 10-5 loss to Pete Peterson of Brookings-Harbor.

Hudson also had a heartbreaker to knock him into the consolation bracket, suffering a 2-1 overtime loss to Henley's Phillip Morgan in the semifinals after being penalized one match-clinching point on a stalling call.

CLASS 3A DISTRICT 3 REGIONAL — At Glide, Illinois Valley advanced four wrestlers to the Class 3A state tournament and captured third place at the District 3 Regional Championships.

Illinois Valley senior Matt Coultas (145 pounds) led throughout in his championship final, earning a 6-3 decision over Myrtle Point's Dillon Rizueno. Gabe Miller (125) and Zack Anderson (135) lost their championship matches but still advanced to state Feb. 25-26 at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Last season, Miller placed third at 119 pounds in the 4A championships.

Freshman T.J. Hughey (130) secured third place and a state berth for the Cougars by pinning Glide's Michael Loomis in 1:40.
