Patient Grizzlies roar past Mazama

ASHLAND — It took a while, but the Ashland boys soccer team picked up where it left off last season.

The defending champion opened Southern Sky Conference play Tuesday with a 6-0 triumph over Mazama at Ashland Middle School.

Adam Pavlich got things rolling in the 29th minute with an unassisted goal — one of his two in the match — and the Grizzlies also received two goals from Nate Roupp in the runaway win.

"Mazama came and just kinda packed it in defensively, and it took us about 28 minutes to figure it out," said Ashland coach Brad Roupp. "They did a good job of holding us off, but we were patient and content and finally as a team we started making runs and finding passes into the passing lanes that were successful."

Simon Linsday (39th minute) and Dakota Wolff (63rd minute) also scored for Ashland (5-1-1, 1-0 SSC), while Miles Fidler and Linsday also earned assists.

CRATER 2, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Crater's defense held Klamath Union in check and the Comets got a hard-earned triumph in both teams' Southern Sky Conference openers.

Matt Crowl put the Comets (2-4-1, 1-0 SSC) on the board in the 31st minute on a set-up from Travis Robbins.

In the 65th minute, Skyler Licato collected the loose ball during a scramble in the box after a corner kick from Elias Rangle and punched it in for Crater.

Comets goalkeeper Ben Pertzer had two saves.

EAGLE POINT 7, NORTH VALLEY 1 — At Eagle Point, Juan Pulido tallied two goals and Dario Madera had a goal and two assists in the nonconference win over Eagle Point (4-0-2).

Jose Rizo added a goal and an assist, and other scores for the Eagles were by Ernesto Esquivel, Tyler Van Dyke and Jose Van Der Meut.

EP led 4-1 at halftime.

District 3

ROGUE RIVER 3, GOLD BEACH 2 — At Rogue River, Justin Brown had a pair of goals, including the go-ahead score, in Rogue River's first win of the season.

ST. MARY'S 3, GLIDE 0 — Keenan Grant banged in two first-half goals, and Michael Brimble got the shutout in goal for St. Mary's home Dist. 3 win.

Grant scored from 10 yards out in the eighth minute and from 12 yards in the 36th on a pass from Lou Arne.
