Parnell repeats as two-way player of year

Opposing coaches have shown South Medford senior Jaylin Parnell plenty of respect on the football field, often trying to avoid him.

They carried those feelings over to Southwest Conference all-league voting as well, unanimously choosing the 6-foot, 200-pound running back and linebacker the offensive and defensive player of the year.

It’s the second straight season the versatile dynamo has swept the top honors.

“That’s pretty good stuff,” said Panthers coach Bill Singler, who repeated as coach of the year and couldn’t remember another player twice earning player-of-the-year accolades on both sides of the ball. “I’m just glad he plays for us. He’s an exceptional guy to be around and a great teammate.”

Parnell led second-ranked South Medford to its second consecutive SWC title, but he had plenty of help.

The Panthers occupied seven first-team all-SWC spots on offense and five on defense for a total of 12. Grants Pass was next with eight, followed by Sheldon with five.

South Medford two-way senior lineman Brandon Ditty repeated as a first-teamer on offense and defense, while senior tackle Michael Cormier repeated on the first-unit offense, as did senior quarterback Robbie Patterson and senior receiver Chad Cota.

Other Panther first-teamers were senior center Daniel Shenk and senior receiver Jaalen Owens on offense, and Owens and senior Josiah Johnson in the secondary on defense.

North Medford senior Jonathinn Casaday earned first-team spots at offensive tackle and defensive line.

Parnell is at home on the football field.

“Let’s face it,” said Singler, “the kid is a football player. He puts in a tremendous amount of effort preparing himself to be the best football player he could be.”

Parnell led conference players in scoring with 132 points — 30 more than the next person — on 22 touchdowns. He was second in rushing with 923 yards and had a per-carry average of 6.7 yards.

On defense, he made 30 tackles, including 13 solos; had two sacks, three tackles for loss, three interceptions and a fumble recovery. He ran two interceptions back for touchdowns.

“He’s always around the football,” said Singler. “A lot of teams don’t want to run to his side. He commands so much respect as a player.”

Patterson, the co-offensive player of the year last year, completed 104 of 154 passes for 1,469 yards and 19 touchdowns this season with only four interceptions.

Cota caught 30 passes for 545 yards and nine scores, and Owens had 22 receptions for 390 yards and six TDs.
