Panthers wrap up Arizona trip with win

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The South Medford baseball team edged Piedra Vista, N.M., 4-2, to wrap up at the Coach Bob Invitational at Pinnacle High on Saturday.

A Piedra Vista error gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Jimmy Sporer's two-out RBI single provided South (3-3) with some insurance.

Relief pitcher Justin James, who picked up his first win of the year, recorded two strikeouts and induced a groundout to end things in the top of the seventh.

Sporer finished 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored and Ryan Carle 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Panthers, who went 2-3 in Arizona. Nate Walker added an RBI single.

Starter Caleb Newman allowed two runs (one earned), one hit and one walk and struck out six in 51/3 innings, but he hit five batters. James fanned three and gave up one hit and one walk.
