Panthers' Todd moves into state quarters

PORTLAND — South Medford's Marina Todd won two matches Thursday at the Portland Tennis Center to advance into the quarterfinals at Class 6A state tennis championships.

Because of rain, the matches were moved to the indoor courts at the center.

The Panther senior will face top-seeded Sophia Bott of Southridge in today's quarterfinal round. Bott, a sophomore, lost in the 2009 title match to teammate Audrey Farr, a junior who is seeded second this year.

Todd lost in the consolation finals her freshman and sophomore years but didn't play tennis last season because of shoulder problems.

Todd dictated the pace and had little trouble defeating Amanda Wagner of West Linn and Arielle Bradford of Central Catholic in the first two rounds. Todd defeated each player by 6-1, 6-1 scores.

"Both matches played out identically," said Panther coach Hal Borg. "Marina just had a lot more horsepower than the other two girls. She was able to move them side-to-side and hit forehand winners."

The only other local player in action Thursday was Kelsey Frey of Grants Pass. Frey, a sophomore, won an opening-round singles match against Krissy Moore of West Salem, 6-1, 6-1, but was eliminated in the second round by Bott, 6-1, 6-0.
