Panthers rally to edge Churchill

EUGENE — South Medford's volleyball team may be young, but the Panthers proved Tuesday that doesn't mean they're anyone's pushover.

Sam Owirka capped a remarkable South Medford rally with a service ace for the winning point in the deciding fifth game against host Churchill. After the Lancers won the first two games 25-15 and 25-17, the Panthers regrouped to win the final three games 25-22, 25-18 and 16-14.

Owirka finished with 12 kills, 12 assists and three aces for the Panthers (1-1), and Maddi Sash added 20 digs and eight kills.

South Medford also received 22 digs and three aces from Amanda Gardner and Grace Brennan had four blocks and three aces.

ASHLAND 3, NORTH MEDFORD 1 — Nikki Small had 19 kills, six aces and four blocks to guide Ashland to a 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-8 nonleague victory.

Teammate Hannah Stocking added eight kills, 10 aces and 17 digs. Piper Cantrell recorded 19 digs and Callie McCoy had 24 assists for the Grizzlies (2-2).

Hillevi Johnson had six kills and seven digs to lead North Medford.

The Black Tornado's league opener on Thursday has been moved to Roseburg.

GRANTS PASS 3, CRATER 1 — At Grants Pass, Crater kept digging itself out of a hole but couldn't quite muster enough to get past Grants Pass in nonleague action. The Cavers won 20-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-20.

Senior outside hitter Taylor Mackey had eight kills, 14 digs and two aces for the Comets (1-2), and senior setter Kayla Hopkinson added 19 assists and six kills.

Mikayla Morgan had 30 assists and Kelsey Saxon added 13 kills to lead Grants Pass, with Rebekah Holman adding 10 kills and five blocks and Kelsey Frey notching nine kills.

HIDDEN VALLEY 3, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Murphy, undefeated Hidden Valley won 25-18, 25-19, 25-17.

Senior middle Hannah Mason had nine kills for Eagle Point (1-4).

Bailey Bars, a sophomore right side, paced the Mustangs' front line with 10 kills. Hidden Valley (14-0) received 23 assists from Amanda Doig and 14 digs and three aces from Sabrina Peckham.
