Panthers come out swinging

It may have been difficult to tell that Friday's doubleheader was the season opener for South Medford.

The Panthers (2-0) pounded out 23 hits and 23 runs to sweep a pair from Mazama, winning 9-1 and 14-3 at Harry & David Field.

Bo Walker was a combined 6-for-7 with an RBI and A.J. Palazzolo had a home run in each game for South.

Palazzolo was 2-for-3 in the opening game and his two-run home run in the second inning to left field, on the first pitch he saw, jumpstarted the Panthers' offense.

Walker was also 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI, and senior pitcher Mark Smith went five innings, allowing two hits, no runs and one walk while striking out six.

South expanded the lead with five runs in the fourth, the key hit being a two-run single to center field by catcher Mike Williamson.

Five Panthers recorded multiple hits and South managed 14 total hits in the second game. Walker led the charge by going 4-for-4, John Adamson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Mike Williams and D.J. Titus both went 2-for-3.

Griff Boyd went 3-for-4 and ended the game with a three-run home run to left field in the fifth.

Boyd had five RBIs in the game. Palazzolo hit his second home run — a two-run blast to right field in the third. He had three RBIs in the contest.

Josh Camp earned the win by pitching four innings and surrendering no earned runs..

South leaves Sunday and will play seven games in a 32-team tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
