Panthers break relay record

GRANTS PASS — In a little more than 3 minutes, South Medford’s long relay team did a number on several record books during the 69th Grants Pass Rotary Track and Field Invitational on Saturday.

The quartet of Peyton Shipley, Reed Hungerford, Ty Boster and Austin Boster zipped to a time of 3 minutes, 22.30 seconds, winning the race by more than 6 1/2 seconds and breaking school, meet and track records.

The meet standard had stood for 16 years. It was previously set by Beaverton at 3:22.34. The former school record was 3:23.53.

“Any time under 3:23 is very good,” said South Medford coach Mark Losinkski. “As far as marks go, that’s the most impressive. Usually when you go to the district championships, most teams knock 2 or 3 seconds off. That’s when they load up with their best kids and everyone gets after it.”

Teams that run under 3:20, he added, “have a chance to win the state title.”

The relay unit jumped to No. 4 for all classes in the state ranking, which is led by Central Catholic at 3:20.44.

It also helped the Panthers to the boys title in the 34-team meet with 117.5 points.

“That’s the biggest meet we go to, in terms of number of teams,” said Losinski. “The boys did really well.”

Grants Pass was second with 87.5 points, and North Medford third with 65.5.

Grants Pass won the girls meet with 95.5 points, followed by Marshfield (79) and South Medford (61).

Losinski penciled out his boys for 111 points prior to the meet.

“The field-event kids jumped up a lot of places from where they should have been, based on paper,” he said. “They threw farther and jumped farther. Yeah, it was cool.”

Speaking of cool, that’s what the temperatures were, and it led to a meet that wasn’t particularly fast in many instances, said Losinski.

South Medford’s long-relay runners also contributed to the point total in other races.

Both Bosters and Shipley were on the winning 4x100 relay, along with Malik Polk, clocking 43.33.

Boster and Shipley ran 1-2 in the 200, with times of 22.65 and 22.91. They came in second and third in the 400 behind Crater’s Cal Duke.

Duke, the top intermediate hurdler in the state for all classifications, ran his first 400 of the season was timed in 48.41 — third-fastest in the state. Boster ran 49.50 and Shipley 50.35.

Polk added a second in the long jump (20 feet, 10 inches) and a third in the 100 (11.62).

Tanner Sayers recorded the Panthers’ only other victory, taking the 3,000 in 8:58.80.

South Medford’s Trent Snyder was second in the javelin (167-0).

“In track, you like to win a lot of events,” said Losinski, “but if you get guys who can place in the top two or three in every event, that’s good, too.”

North Medford’s Kaison Faust was a dual winner, sailing 22-6 in the long jump and capturing the 100 in 11.21.

Duke added a victory in the 300 hurdles in 40.65.

In the girls meet, South Medford freshman Emma Schmerbach notched personal bests in winning the 800 and 1,500, with times of 2:19.23 and 4:49.40.

Phoenix’s Sienna Bauer won the 100 hurdles in 15.92, edging South Medford’s Morgan Burke (16.12). Burke also was runner-up in the 300 hurdles in 48.62, behind Churchill’s Hazel Mesman (46.87).

Baylee Touey of North Valley claimed three individual events, the 100 (12.48), 200 (25.83) and 400 (59.22).
