Panther wrestlers surge past GP

GRANTS PASS — South Medford won five consecutive matches between 170 pounds and 285, including two by fall, to storm past Grants Pass 42-21 in a District 6 dual Wednesday at Grants Pass High School.

With the team score knotted at 12-all, South Medford 170-pounder Cole Schumack began the surge by pinning Hayden Lackey in the first round, in 1 minute, 12 seconds. Four matches later, South’s Nate Eli clinched the heavyweight match by pinning Sjoren Geiger in 4:54, giving the Panthers a 36-12 cushion.

South Medford 126-pounder Kilian Cosgrove also earned a pin, beating Ethan Diatte in 1:33.

TORNADO SWEEP: North Medford dominated a three-way dual to pick up District 6 victories over South Eugene and Willamette at North Medford High.

The Black Tornado took advantage of 10 forfeits to shutout South Eugene 83-0, and rode five pins to a 76-3 victory over Willamette. The wins improved the Tornado to 2-1 in league duals.

North 126-pounder Griffin Gutches tallied two pins on the day, beating South Eugene’s Nicholas Salazar in 1:08 and Willamette’s Juan Lomeli in 37 seconds.

North Medford’s Chase Mitchell (120) and Benjamin Zeigler (132) also earned pins against Willamette.

SKYLINE DUALS: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix narrowly lost to Henley 21-18 and routed both Hidden Valley (48-30) and Klamath Union (54-24) in the six-team meet at Klamath Union High School.

Against Henley, Phoenix’s Zachariah Trenbeath pinned Zeb Moeller in the 160-pound match in 46 seconds to give the Pirates a narrow lead, but Henley prevailed minutes later with a pin of its own.

Phoenix tallied six pins against both Hidden Valley and Klamath Union. Ezra DeLuca, Phoenix’s 113-pounder, won by fall against Henley, Hidden Valley and Klamath Union.

PREP SWIMMING

DODSON LEADS TORNADO: At North Bend, North Medford freshman Zoey Dodson won two individual events and swam the anchor for the Black Tornado’s victorious 200-yard medley relay team in a nonleague dual.

Dodson won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 0.32 seconds to best runner up Vianka Hoyer of North Bend (2:05.69) by more than five seconds. Dodson also won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.40 in dominant fashion and helped North Medford’s 200 medley relay team win in 2:00.94.

Another freshman came up big for the North Medford boys, as Levi Buker won the 100 butterfly in 58.73 and helped the 200 medley relay team pull out a victory in 1:47.91.
