North Medford's D too much for Glencoe

Chris Faust provided a snapshot of his explosiveness during a North Medford romp over Glencoe in the first round of the 22nd Abby's Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament at the Black Tornado gym Wednesday.

Faust's eight points helped spark a 14-0 Black Tornado run to begin the third quarter and North Medford cruised to a 72-53 victory over the Crimson Tide of Hillsboro.

North Medford (7-1) advances into the semifinals at 7:30 tonight against Thurston, a 65-63 winner over West Salem.

North Medford capitalized on three Glencoe turnovers on its first five possessions to open the second half. The dynamic Faust scored on a lob at the rim to begin the surge, added two free throws, a dunk and another field goal.

"I was just getting open and being active," said Faust, a 6-foot-2 senior wing. "We were running our offense. We're a high-tempo team."

Faust paced North with 17 points.

"We need that from (Faust)," said North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn. "It gives us more options than just Derek (Mautz)."

North bumped a 12-point lead at intermission into a 50-24 margin before Kurtis Campbell scored the Crimson Tide's first points of the second half about midway through the period. Campbell finished with a game-high 19 points.

North Medford, which defeated Glencoe 70-56 in the Lakeside Holiday Classic on Dec. 20, never trailed in the game. The score was tied 2-all, then the Black Tornado went on a 10-1 run to take command and led 25-10 by the end of the period.

The Black Tornado pressure-man defense hounded the Crimson Tide (2-6) into 22 turnovers and allowed North's fast break to flourish.

"Their pressure got to us," said Glencoe coach Matt Schmidt. "They were getting out and running. Our quick shots and turnovers led to that."

Mautz was a defensive catalyst with six of North's 12 steals.

"Overall we pressured them how we wanted to," said Mautz. "We were trying to speed them up and turn the ball over."

Mautz, who's leading North with an 18-point average, wasn't the scoring presence he's been for much of the season. The senior guard tallied 12 points and added three assists.

"Everyone was getting touches and scoring," said Mautz. "I was looking for my shot but also looking to get other guys involved."

The Black Tornado had 11 players reach the scoring column and registered 17 assists on 27 field goals. North took a season-low six 3-pointers and made five.

"We had a lot of inside shots," Plankenhorn said. "Anytime you get a lot of steals, you're going to get a lot of layins. I thought we shared the ball well."

Junior point guard Oshea Bailey did a good job orchestrating the Black Tornado fast break and was aggressive going to the rim. Bailey had eight points and six assists.

"Oshea Bailey got back to the Oshea we know," said Plankenhorn. "He definitely has a lot more game in him."

After suffering his second double-digit loss to North in the past eight days, the second-year Glencoe coach was impressed.

"They're physical, athletic and fundamental," said Schmidt. "And they play well together."
