North Medford netters sweep Panthers

The No. 3-ranked North Medford volleyball team took care of rival South Medford for the second time this season, winning 25-18, 25-13, 25-14 Tuesday at North Medford High.

The Black Tornado, which already wrapped up the Southwest Conference title, received a balanced effort to improve to 9-0 in the SWC and 27-5 overall.

Senior middle blocker Megan Bartling had 13 kills and five blocks, senior outside hitter Whitney Hodnett managed 13 kills and eight digs, senior outside hitter Kellie Satterfield led the team with 16 digs, six aces and five kills and Natalie Lorenz recorded 32 assists.

"Obviously our goal is to finish strong and get ready for the playoffs," North coach Ron Beick said. "It was nice to win that way."

Beick called Tuesday's effort one of his team's best in terms of serving with 14 aces. The Black Tornado also showed offensive balance with four players tallying at least five kills.

"We kept South out of their offense by serving different areas," Beick said. "Natalie (Lorenz) also did a great job distributing the ball. That balance makes it hard for people to offset any one hitter, which has given us an advantage this year."

North jumped out to an early lead in Game 1 and cruised to victory, but South (16-10, 3-6 SWC) managed leads to start the second and third games before the Black Tornado seized momentum each time.

"They were able to ride certain players anytime we seemed to be getting any momentum on our side," South coach Adam Wagman said. "They kept the pressure on us."

ROSEBURG 3, GRANTS PASS 2 — At Grants Pass, after being down two games, Roseburg came back and got a Southwest Conference win in five games.

SHELDON 3, SOUTH EUGENE 0 — At Eugene, Hannah Thompson anchored Sheldon's defense with 25 digs in a 25-23, 25-16, 25-20 Southwest Conference victory.
