North Medford crowns 2, Eagles 4th at GP Winter Kickoff

GRANTS PASS — The North Medford wrestling team crowned two individual champions in the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff on Saturday, and although Eagle Point was without a champion, the Eagles captured fourth place in the 42-team event.

Both North Medford junior Cole Zoller and sophomore Alex Silva won their respective weight classes while the Eagles featured a pair of runners-up with senior Bradey Thrash and freshman Luke Callahan. That gave Eagle Point the edge on the Black Tornado and tournament host Grants Pass, which finished tied for fifth place.

In the championship match at 145 pounds, Zoller came out on top against Dayton’s Travis Sherman with an 8-6 decision, and at 106 pounds, Silva pinned Callahan in 41 seconds.

Thrash fell to Milwaukie’s Jacob Ashley, who picked up a 10-7 victory at 126 pounds.

Thomas Hamilton was North Medford’s runner up in the 170-pound class by a narrow margin as Mountain View’s Colton Burkhardt earned a 1-0 decision.

Phoenix took 11th place due in large part to senior Ezra DeLuca coming away with a 14-11 victory over Dayton’s Ryan Penrose in the 113-pound championship.

Gabe Vidlak of Cascade Christian, which tied for 14th with Lassen, captured the crown at 120 pounds with a 15-6 major decision over Lassen’s Chase Montgomery.

Ashland’s Trevor Fulton grabbed second place after being upended 11-1 in the 182-pound title match. The Grizzlies took 21st place.
