North falters in second half at Roseburg

ROSEBURG — North Medford had things going its way for most of the first half in a Southern Oregon Hybrid boys basketball contest with Roseburg on Tuesday, but the Indians stormed back after intermission to post a 52-46 home victory.

The ninth-ranked Black Tornado (11-4, 2-3 SOH) built a 21-11 first-half lead before the Indians rallied late to trail by five at the break.

"We were playing solid in the first half," North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn said. "Our defense was sound and we forced them to take some tough shots."

North shot 56 percent from the field in the opening half and got a boost off the bench from Marcus Ellis, who scored six of his eight points in the first two quarters.

"He was penetrating and getting to the hoop," Plankenhorn said of the senior point guard.

North Medford started hot on 3-pointers — making three of its first four — but then missed 10 in a row from long range.

The Indians (11-4, 5-1) began finding the mark in the second half and forced North into seven turnovers. Roseburg sealed the victory with 14-of-17 shooting from the foul line in the final period. Tim Weber connected on 6 of 7 free throws in the fourth.

Roseburg's Micah Audiss led all scorers with 22 points.

Jared Knox paced North with 12 points. Chris Faust had five rebounds and joined Knox in notching three assists each.

"We didn't have anyone step up and score," said Plankenhorn. "That's been our issue for a while."
