North falls to Sheldon

EUGENE — Alex Barry has stepped up as a real leader for the North Medford volleyball squad.

Barry turned in another impressive performance Tuesday but the Black Tornado dropped a hard-fought 25-15, 25-23, 18-25, 25-13 road match to undefeated Sheldon.

“Our kids showed a lot of heart and were competitive,” said North Medford coach Malcolm Munson. “Sheldon put pressure on us but we didn’t back down.”

Barry, a senior setter, had 31 assists, 16 digs and three aces.

“(Barry) brought a lot of energy and she’s taking a leadership role,” said Munson. “She’s our quarterback on the floor and all the balls go through her hands.”

Adriane McLemore chipped in 10 kills, seven digs and three aces for North (7-3, 1-1 SWC) and sophomore Lauren Barry contributed 14 kills, 10 digs and two aces.

Sheldon improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the SWC.

“We took them deeper into the match than they would have liked,” said Munson.

ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: At Roseburg, senior hitter Chanel Groom had six kills and two blocks to lead South Medford, which was swept by Roseburg 25-18, 25-14, 25-11 in a SWC match.

Evelyn Laupola finished with a team-high three blocks for the Panthers (2-5, 0-3).

SOUTH EUGENE 3, GRANTS PASS 1: At Grants Pass, South Eugene won the Southwest Conference match, 27-25, 12-25, 25-23, 25-23.

Grants Pass dropped to 2-6 overall, 0-3 in league. South Eugene is 4-1, 2-0 in the SWC.

ASHLAND 3, EAGLE POINT 1: At Eagle Point, Ashland won the Midwestern League match, 25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23.

Alex Crane had 18 kills, Emily DeVall 10 kills and 11 digs and Grace Angermeier and Sydney Philpott 17 digs apiece for the Grizzlies (2-3, 2-2 MWL).

Also for Ashland, Lili Smith had four aces and Sophia Rooney six kills.

Ryleigh Gainey had nine kills, 18 digs and five aces to lead Eagle Point. Also for the Eagles (2-2, 1-2) Aly Sheffler had six kills and 13 digs, Nauvoo Beal finished with 27 assists and nine digs, Aliah Darling contributed four kills, 10 digs and two aces, Ashli Meerten added four kills and three blocks and Emmalee Stevens chipped in 28 digs.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, MAZAMA 0: At Klamath Falls, undefeated Class 3A Cascade Christian used a strong attack and effective serving to post a 25-11, 25-8, 25-6 nonconference victory against the 4A opponent.

Outside hitter Alyssa Vaughn led the front line with 11 kills and Caroline McMahon added nine kills and five aces.

Allison Winter passed out 27 assists.

The Challengers (5-0) served 14 aces in the match.

GLIDE 3, ST. MARY’S 2: After dropping the first two games, St. Mary’s rallied but came up short in a 25-16, 25-12, 25-27, 19-25, 15-10 loss to visiting Glide at the Crusaders gym.

Outside hitter Hallie Shean had a strong all-around match with 11 kills, 10 digs and 16-of-18 serving with six aces.

Katie Reitman came up with five blocks to go with 10 kills for St. Mary’s (1-7) and Abbie Christman had seven kills, three blocks was 11-11 serving.

Ashley Gurr distributed 30 assists.

GILCHRIST 3, PROSPECT 1: At Gilchrist, Lexy Stockebrand had five aces, nine digs and one block for Prospect, which lost the Mountain Valley League match, 25-18, 25-11, 20-25, 25-12.

Also for the Cougars (0-3, 0-2 MVL), Cassidy Bridges contributed two aces, 11 digs, four kills and three blocks and Maylee Breiholz a pair of aces, five digs and two assists.

The Grizzlies (5-0, 2-0) lost just their fourth set in five matches to open the season.
