REDMOND — Class 6A North Medford, 5A Crater and 4A Phoenix each finished second in their respective wrestling pools Friday to advance into championship bracket action in today’s second and final day of the Oregon Classic at Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Expo Center.
Also at the 5A level, Crater’s second varsity placed third in its pool and Eagle Point was fifth in its pool at the annual dual-meet event.
North Medford’s day began with a 45-22 setback against Mountain View, the 6A Pool 4 champion, but the Black Tornado responded with wins over McMinnville (58-18), Lincoln (75-6) and Clackamas (42-24) before receiving a bye.
Alex Silva and Benjamin Zeigler were the lone North Medford wrestlers to go 4-0 on Friday, with Silva winning matches at 106 and 113 pounds and Zeigler scoring wins at 132 and 138. Matthew Bryant went 3-0 at 160 before sitting out the Clackamas dual.
Crater finished second in its pool to host Redmond, which edged the Comets 37-33 in their matchup. Crater scored wins over Hillsboro (53-21), Crook County’s second varsity (63-9) and Sandy (64-15), and also received two byes.
Tanner Ulrey, Nathan Santoni and Joseph Jordahl were the lone Comets to record four wins Friday, with Ulrey winning at 120, Santoni at 152 and Jordahl at 195. Hunter Hiatt earned three wins at 145 but sat out the dual against Crook County’s second squad.
Freddy Barajas went 4-0 at 120 and 126 pounds for Eagle Point, which lost 41-33 to Scappoose, 54-25 to Crook County, 43-42 to Hood River Valley and 48-33 to Crescent Valley.
Phoenix’s only loss in pool play was to Tillamook, 66-18, and the Pirates countered with wins over Ontario (45-27), McLoughlin/Weston-McEwen/Griswold (48-21) and Mazama (48-21).
For the Pirates, Jacky Hawkins and Elijah Santana each led the charge by going 4-0, with Hawkins winning at 138 and 145 and Santana winning at 152 and 160.
