North cleans up in all-SOH awards

The North Medford girls and boys soccer teams capped successful regular seasons by nabbing big honors in Southern Oregon Hybrid all-league, which was released on Wednesday.

Senior Garrett Byrd landed player-of-the-year honors for the Black Tornado boys, while North's Amanda Hisey earned top player accolades on the girls side for the second straight season.

The North boys, which edged out Grants Pass for the SOH title, had four first-team selections. South Medford placed three on the first team.

Byrd had 10 goals and 13 assists for the Tornado this season.

"He's just huge on and off the field," said North Medford boys coach Michael Belzberg, who, along with Grants Pass' Lowell Anderson, was named coach of the year. "He inspires the guys with his talks before games. He's motivating guys. He's almost like another coach out there."

Hisey had four assists and scored 17 goals for the Black Tornado girls this season, including a pair of game-winners. She scored in all but three games for the SOH co-champion Tornado.

"She scores but does a lot off the ball and puts a lot of pressure on the defenders," said North girls coach Emily Miller. "She makes a big difference in a game, not just with scoring and assists but other plays, too."

The Black Tornado girls had three first-team selections, while South Medford, which shared the league title with North, had five first-teamers.

South Medford's Chris Hollewijn was named coach of the year.
