The North Medford and Ashland volleyball teams each made it to the quarterfinals of the loaded Rogue Valley Classic before being eliminated Saturday.

The 23-team tournament, played at North and South Medford high schools, included 10 teams ranked in the top 10 in either Class 6A or 5A and several others just outside the top 10.

Jesuit, the top-ranked 6A team in Oregon, defeated No. 8 Barlow in the championship match, 25-23, 25-19.

Cascade Christian, the No. 6-ranked Class 3A team, defeated Hidden Valley for the consolation championship, 13-25, 25-18, 15-9.

North Medford placed second in its pool behind McNary, then got into bracket play and defeated Crater in the first round, 25-14, 25-13. The Black Tornado lost to powerhouse Jesuit in its next match, 25-18, 25-12.

"I had a talk with the kids before the match," said North Medford coach Erika Wright, "and we talked about how often it is that you get to play teams in this sport that are good, like Jesuit. I told them how to handle the pressure, and they did really well. They were really resilient."

After the first-game loss, the Tornado stayed with the Crusaders to 17-all before the Portland team pulled away.

North Medford got strong play from senior outside hitter Hillevi Johnson and senior setter Danielle Boyd.

In pool play, North Medford defeated Silverton, No. 5 in 5A, 25-16, 27-25. It lost to McNary and split with Hidden Valley.

Ashland, No. 3 in 5A, won its pool, which included ninth-ranked 6A Sprague. The Grizzlies had a bye in bracket play before falling to Summit, No. 1 in 5A.

In pool play, Ashland topped Bend, 25-17, 25-17, and split with Crater and Sprague — beating the Olympians 25-23 and losing by the same score.

South Medford also made the championship bracket, placing second in its pool to Mountain View, ranked fourth in 5A, but finishing ahead of Southridge, No. 5 in 6A.

The Panthers defeated Southridge, 27-26, 25-22, 25-22, and lost to Mountain View, 25-12, 25-22, 25-18. In bracket play, South Medford was ousted by Marshfield.
