Loggers' season ends in tiebreaker

CHILOQUIN — In a match that could serve as the microcosm of the Butte Falls volleyball team's inconsistent season, the Loggers lost to Gilchrist on Wednesday in a battle for the final spot into the Mountain Valley League tournament.

Gilchrist won 16-25, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 16-14.

"We came out like gang busters in the first game but couldn't play consistently," Butte Falls coach Ronnie Burg said. "We had unforced errors and had trouble in serve receive. Our whole season has been up and down."

The Loggers finish the season 6-8 overall and 5-8 in the MVL. Gilchrist, at 6-7 in the MVL, will be the fourth seed into the league tournament.

Junior setter Cheyenna Kirkpatrick led Butte Falls with 10 assists, three kills and a perfect 15-of-15 serving. Sophomore middle Beth Sutfin had seven kills and freshman middle Mariah Moore had six kills for the Loggers. Junior setter Annie Ferguson had seven assists and was 22-of-27 serving with seven aces.

Junior Aarika Stephens helped the Loggers to the Game 1 win by serving nine points. She served six straight points in Game 2, but Gilchrist managed to overcome the 7-1 deficit.

Ferguson led Butte Falls to the Game 4 win with six straight points that put the Loggers ahead 18-16. Butte Falls held a 14-13 lead in Game 5 but, following a service error, Gilchrist served the final two points for the win.
