EAGLE POINT — Once the Eagle Point softball team found a window of opportunity to keep its season alive in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs, it was too late.
The Eagles manufactured all four of their runs with two outs in the sixth inning, but the rally fell short as Liberty escaped with a 5-4 victory at Eagle Point High School on Wednesday.
After two pop-ups and with one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth, Candace Rodgers and Tatum Winter hit back-to-back singles to put the Eagles' first run on the board.
A two-run double from Jenna Richardson trimmed the Eagle deficit to 5-3, and Tia Garrett capped the big inning with an RBI single.
The Eagles (17-10) were able to get the leadoff batter, who represented the tying run, aboard in the bottom of the seventh, but Liberty forced three straight outs to end the game.
Eagles senior ace Chloe Hanson allowed five runs — three earned — on nine hits and one walk against nine strikeouts.
Garrett went 2-for-2 and Winter finished 2-for-3.
Liberty's Stephanie Meeuwsen hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help her team take a 4-0 lead.
