Lakers prove too much for Indians

ROSEBURG — The Roseburg football team's run at the state championship was halted on Friday by high-powered Lake Oswego, which claimed a 47-7 victory in the Class 6A quarterfinals at Finlay Field.

The Indians (9-3), who were too much for South Medford in a second-round game last Friday, couldn't keep up with Lakers quarterback Alex Matthews, who threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns.

Steven Long ran for 92 yards on just eight carries and found the end zone twice for the Lakers.

The Indians' lone touchdown was a run by Javier Mandera with 19 seconds remaining in the game. He paced the Roseburg ground attack with 95 yards on 21 carries.

In other 6A playoff games, Sheldon rolled past Grant 49-7, Jesuit defeated Tigard 35-7 and Central Catholic shot past Oregon City 55-33.

In Class 5A semifinal action, Mountain upset No. 1 Marist 31-14 and Sherwood coasted past West Albany 61-28.
