Knight baseball clips Pirates

TALENT — Sophomore right-hander Mason Stella was impressive in his first varsity start for the Phoenix baseball team on Thursday.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, they didn’t generate enough offense against North Valley, which scored on an error in the fifth inning to get the 2-1 edge and hand host Phoenix its first Skyline Conference defeat.

Stella went all seven innings, allowing two runs — one earned — on seven hits and two walks.

James Turnbull finished 2-for-3 and drove in the Pirates’ lone run in the third inning to knot the score at 1-all. He added a pair of stolen bases while Kevin Botermans finished 3-for-3 for Phoenix (7-4, 1-1 Sky).

North Valley’s Cameron Peck scored an inside-the-park home run with two outs in the first inning.

ASHLAND 10, NORTH EUGENE 0: At Eugene, Shae Scott finished 4-for-4 and drove in three runs and Ashland’s pitching staff combined for a two-hit shutout.

Grizzlies starter Peyton Fuller picked up the win, allowing just two hits to go with nine strikeouts. He also walked two over 5 ⅓ innings before Nick Sanderson and Jesse Carroll closed things down.

Matt O’Donnell went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Grizzlies (6-4, 1-3 Midwestern League), while Sanderson finished 2-for-5 and Nate McLennan drove in two runs.

NORTH VALLEY 30, PHOENIX 17: At Talent, Phoenix’s Brooke Kentner had two home runs and finished with seven RBIs but North Valley’s 11-run first inning put the Pirates too far behind.

Kentner hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and added a two-run shot in the seventh inning.

Tiona Hurd finished 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs and a couple of runs scored for the Pirates (2-7, 0-2 Skyline Conference), who also got a solo home run from McKenna Page. Page was 3-for-3 and scored four times.
