Ireland pitches GP softball past Henley

KLAMATH FALLS — Devin Ireland allowed one run on eight hits in a complete-game effort and Haley Dougherty went 2-for-2 with a double, lifting the Cavers to a 5-1 nonleague softball victory over Henley on Tuesday at Henley High School.

Facing a 1-0 deficit in the top of the third, Grants Pass scored two runs on an error and a sacrifice fly by Ireland. The Cavers (21-5) added three insurance runs on two hits in the fourth, with one run coming home when Dougherty drew a bases-loaded walk.

Alexis Virtue went 2-for-2 to pace Henley (22-5).

The game was a state playoff warm-up for both teams. Grants Pass, the Southwest Conference runners-up, earned the seventh seed in the 32-team Class 6A softball tournament and is set to host Sprague in the first round Monday. Henley earned the No. 3 seed in the 16-team Class 4A tourney and will host an opponent yet-to-be-determined on May 23.

BUTTE FALLS 9, LOST RIVER 8, 8 inn.: At Merrill, Stephanie Woods’ RBI single scored Leanna McNabb with the winning run in extra innings during the Class 2A/1A District 4 game.

McNabb opened the eighth inning for Butte Falls (9-10, 4-6 Dist. 4) with a single, stole second and scored on Woods’ second hit of the game.

Page Ensley had four hits and scored four runs for the Loggers and McNabb had two hits.
