Host Comets shut out Silverton in tourney

CENTRAL POINT — Zach Zelecki and Bruce Sanford stymied Silverton and Crater came up with the big plays when it mattered most Monday on the opening day of the Crater Spring Break Invitational.

Zelecki posted eight strikeouts and no walks and Sanford struck out the side in the seventh to clinch a 3-0 baseball victory at Anhorn Field.

Silverton actually outhit Crater 7-6, but Corey Wynant's two hits proved key for the Comets (2-0), who play Forest Grove at 7 tonight.

Wynant singled in the fifth and advanced to third after stealing second and moving to third when the catcher's throw sailed into center field. Craig Kathol followed with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Derek Cartwright's single put Kos Ray on third and, after a stolen base, Andrew Tracy pulled off a squeeze bunt for a 2-0 lead. Wynant followed with an RBI single.

Silverton's Justin McClaughry was 2-for-3.

In Monday's other action, Forest Grove beat Franklin 13-4, Barlow topped Lakeridge 10-0 in five innings and Eagle (Idaho) beat Cleveland 8-2 in a five-inning, rain-shortened game.

ROSEBURG 7, CANBY 5 — At Roseburg, Roseburg put up six runs in the second inning to take care of Canby early in a nonconference contest.

Jordan Guthrie was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and starting pitcher Matt Thomson gave up three runs and struck out 10 in five innings for the Indians (2-0).
