Healthy Crusaders win in 5

LAKEVIEW — St. Mary's welcomed back an important piece to the lineup Tuesday night and earned a Southern Cascade League volleyball victory over Lakeview in the process with the playoffs looming.

The Crusaders (16-14, 8-4 SCL), the second seed out of the SCL, defeated the Honkers 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 15-4.

Setter Jordan Jackson returned after missing two weeks with a broken finger and finished with 39 assists.

St. Mary's coach James Joy says Jackson returning to the lineup "had a domino effect."

"Getting Jordan back was important to find our rhythm," Joy said. "There were some plays tonight when people were uncertain and hesitant because they had gotten used to our other system. That's why we had trouble in Game 1. It was good to get that game under our belts before we go to state."

Sophomore Kylee Adderson returned to her normal position as middle blocker after filling in as setter and finished with 13 blocks and 11 kills.

"She had an amazing night at the net," Joy says.

Outside hitters Danielle Shubat added 27 digs and 10 kills and Kate Traister added 25 digs and eight kills.

Lakeview started Game 1 with an 8-0 lead behind strong serving, including four aces. St. Mary's responded despite losing the game.

"We felt like we had the momentum in Game 1 even though we lost," Joy said.

Lakeview led 5-1 to start Game 2, but St. Mary's tied it at 13 and Dominique Valdez served the Crusaders' final three points with the match tied at 22.

St. Mary's missed four serves in Game 3, contributing to the loss before responding with dominating play in Games 4 and 5.

The Crusaders host Tuesday's loser between Salem Academy and Blanchet in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday.
