Hammericksen, St. Mary’s first in Phoenix tourney

Baylee Hammericksen has been quite the addition for the two-time defending Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state champion St. Mary’s girls golf team.

Hammericksen posted a stellar round of 1-under-par 71 to win medalist honors Wednesday at the 10-school Phoenix Tournament at Centennial Golf Course.

The Crusaders graduated one of their mainstays, Staesha Flock, and the freshman Hammericksen has assumed the No. 1 role this season.

“(Hammericksen) was really solid today,” said St. Mary’s coach Kevin Klabunde. “She had lots of birdie opportunities and even missed a couple she could have made. She’s been our low scorer in all our tournaments except one.

“She’s very dedicated and passionate about her game,” added Klabunde.

The Crusaders demonstrated their team strength with Kaylee Wu, last year’s state runnerup, carding 74 and Kamern Ford registering a 79.

“For a good part of the round, Kaylee was under par,” said Klabunde. “She lost a few shots at the end.”

St. Mary’s even received a career-best round of 100 from No. 4 scorer, Grace Johnson, and won the team title with a 324.

Crater had two golfers in the top five, Haley Brown (81) and Caitlin O’Connor (86), and finished a solid second (383) and host Phoenix was third (420).
