Hammericksen leads St. Mary’s girls to win

ROSEBURG — Freshman Baylee Hammericksen led three St. Mary’s golfers to the top of the leaderboard as the Crusaders won the Cascade Community Credit Union Challenge girls tournament at Roseburg Country Club Friday.

St. Mary’s, the two-time defending Class 3A state champion, shot a 350, edging runner-up Roseburg by six shots. Crater was third with a 387.

In the boys tournament, South Medford’s Riggs Loftin paced the Panthers to fourth place with a 353 stroke total. Bandon won at 313, followed by Roseburg (332) and Grants Pass (347).

Hammericksen went out in 36 en route to a 76, winning the individual title by six shots over teammate Kamryn Ford. Kaylee Wu tied South Medford’s Kirsten Reed for third with an 83.

Loftin finished second in the boys tourney, firing an even-par 35 on the back nine for a 2-over 73. Bandon’s Scotty Kennon was medalist with a 69.

St. Mary’s Bryce Stiemert tied for fourth with a 79.

Baseball

PHOENIX 11, NORTH VALLEY 1, 6 inn.: At Merlin, freshman pitcher Ethan Humble kicked off Skyline Conference play with a two-hitter for Phoenix.

Humble, who improved to 3-0, went the distance, striking out six while allowing one unearned run and one hit batter without issuing a walk.

Joseph Price’s sacrifice fly scored Freedom Martinez in the top of the sixth, which was enough to win by 10-run mercy rule.

The Pirates (8-3, 1-0 Skyline) tallied six runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Braeden Watts’ two-run single.

Brennan Watts and Dylan Knudson each had three hits and scored twice, while Martinez went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a pair of walks.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-5, LAKEVIEW 0-3: Kyle Reece pitched a two-hit shutout and Cascade Christian chalked up 10 runs in the fourth inning of Game 1 before completing the doubleheader sweep of Lakeview at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Reece struck out 10 over five innings and walked none for Cascade Christian (4-6, 3-0 Southern Cascade League).

The Challengers’ Declan Payne, Sam Martin, Elijah Smith and Joel McLemore each had three hits. Payne had a triple, three RBIs and two runs while Smith drove in two and scored twice.

Gunnar Thompson went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs, and Jadon Rullamas was 2-for-2 with three runs scored for the Challengers.

In Game 2, Davis Federico had a two-run single in the fifth inning that put the Challengers out in front for good.

Federico finished 2-for-2, McLemore went 2-for-4 and Payne scored twice.

Softball

NORTH VALLEY 10, PHOENIX 7: At Merlin, Phoenix hit the ball well but defensive miscues proved costly as North Valley seized the Skyline Conference opener.

Phoenix’s Josie Bolstad keyed a six-run fifth with a two-run double, a play she scored on when a throw from the outfield was errant.

Brooke Kentner went 3-for-4 for the Pirates (4-4, 0-1 Skyline), who churned out 10 hits but committed four errors. Bolstad and Ashley Gurr were each 2-for-3.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 14-5, LAKEVIEW 4-2: Freshman Katelyn Willard’s monster afternoon propelled Cascade Christian to the sweep at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

In the opener, Willard had three hits and six RBIs while tossing a two-hitter. She fanned seven over six innings, allowing four unearned runs and three walks.

She had a two-run double in the fifth inning and drove in two more on a triple in the sixth.

Mia Mayben and Mallory Meilicke had two hits apiece for the Challengers (9-6, 3-0). Mayben scored three times and drove in a run.

In the opener, Willard struck out nine over seven innings and allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits and a pair of walks.

Tied at 2-all, Rebecca Clark put the Challengers in control in the third with an RBI single before Makenna Payne’s ground-rule double made it 4-2.

Clark, Mayben and Meilicke had two hits each while freshman Ali Modrell made several defensive plays at catcher, as did Clark in center field.
