GP gains a split with no-hitter

CENTRAL POINT — Central Point Combined Transport and the Grants Pass Diggers got strong pitching performances in each end of an American Legion A Area 4 Southern Division doubleheader Friday at Anhorn Field.

Central Point won the opener 8-2 behind the pitching of Bruce Sanford, while Grants Pass had three pitchers combine for a no-hitter in a 9-4 victory in the nightcap.

"In the first game Bruce Sanford was dominant for us," said Central Point coach Mack Lewis. "In the second game, Buddy Saxon was dominating for them. There were a lot of frustrated hitters."

Sanford struck out 11 and tossed a three-hitter for Central Point in the opener.

For Central Point (2-10 Area 4), Craig Kathol had two hits and scored twice and Christian Massey contributed a pair of hits.

In the second game, Diggers starter Saxon struck out seven through five innings. Ray Madrigal and Zach Morgan each pitched one inning to preserved the no-hitter.

David Chaldu, Ryan Miller and Morgan each had two hits for the Diggers (3-3 Area 4).

APPLE VALLEY 11, NORTH JACKSON EAGLES 3 — At Redmond, the North Jackson Eagles jumped out to an early lead but it didn't last long in their opening game at the six-team, round-robin Redmond Invitational.

The Eagles (3-8) capitalized on all four errors by the Wenatchee, Wash., squad to score three runs in the top of the first inning. North Jackson's only hit in the inning was an RBI single by Frank Charlton.

Apple Valley's three runs in the bottom of the sixth ended the game early on the eight-run mercy rule.

NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 8-13, GRANTS PASS DIGGERS 6-0 ­— At Grants Pass, Dylan Bedortha picked up a save in the opener and tossed a three-hit, five-inning shutout in the second game as North Medford posted an Area 4 Southern Division sweep on Thursday at Agnew-Lytle Field.

Mark Cokenour went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs to pace the Mavericks' 11-hit attack. Hayden Wolfe added two hits, scored twice and drove in one, while Colin Sowers had two hits and one run and one RBI.

Bedortha registered his second save of the season by retiring the side in order with two strikeouts in the seventh.

For Grants Pass, Brock Dean went 2-3 and scored once.

In the nightcap, Bedortha struck out five and didn't issue a walk to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Sowers went 3-4 with two runs and two RBIs for North Medford (14-1, 11-1 Area 4).
