Eagle Point scores sweep of Douglas

EAGLE POINT — Wade McCready found his pitching form and Johnny Wilkerson had a big day at the plate to lead Eagle Point to its first two wins of the season in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Douglas on Saturday.

McCready allowed only one hit and pitched to two batters over the minimum in leading the Eagles to a 4-1 triumph in the opener, and Wilkerson was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs to help complete the sweep with a 9-8 win in the nightcap.

McCready struck out 14 and walked one. The senior right-hander allowed a leadoff single by Sky Woods in the fourth inning, and Woods stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch for the only blemish against McCready.

"It was the Wade of old," said EP head coach Rob Cowden, whose team improved to 2-5 overall. "He worked ahead, hit his spots and changed speeds very well today."

Wilkerson, a freshman, was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI in Game 1, with Ben Zomerdyk and Shane Bluhm each going 2-for-3 with one RBI and Austin Fosenburg 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Bluhm provided the highlight to Game 2 with a grand slam home run — the first in high school for the EP junior.

"It was a great time for it," said Cowden.

Bluhm's blast helped the Eagles build a 5-0 lead and they were ahead 9-4 before Douglas made it interesting with four seventh-inning runs.

Matt Smith was 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI for EP in the nightcap.
