Deckwar, Smith lift Ashland to first girls soccer victory

ALBANY — Chloe Deckwar and Riley Smith provided the offense as the Ashland girls soccer team registered its first win of the season Friday.

Deckwar, a senior attacking midfielder, had two goals and two assists, while Smith chipped in a pair of goals and one assist as the Grizzlies defeated West Albany 5-0 in the nonconference match.

It took the Grizzlies (1-5) until the second half to find their offensive rhythm.

Deckwar scored just two minutes into the game, but the half ended with Ashland leading just 1-0.

Smith's goal almost midway through the second period gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 margin.

"Once we got that second goal things seemed to click," Ashland coach Eric Wolff said. "We had some nice combinations and were unselfish."

At the 67th minute, Annika Hearn connected on a header off a corner kick by Deckwar. Then in the next eight minutes, Deckwar and Smith scored again.

Rinchen Thomas posted the shutout in net for the Grizzlies.
