De Luca sets Phoenix school record

BEND — Nevina De Luca broke the Phoenix school record for the 5,000 meters in cross country Friday at the Oxford Classic.

The junior placed sixth with a time of 18 minutes, 52.6 seconds in a meet dominated by Class 5A power Summit — the Storm had the top four finishers.

It placed her second in the 4A state ranks, and Cascade Christian's Stephanie Croy was one spot back in seventh in 18:57.9, putting her No. 2 in the state 3A/2A/1A ranks.

De Luca bettered Marci Klimek's 2005 record of 19:00. De Luca's previous best was 19:01 at the Northwest Classic two weeks ago.

Phoenix coach John Cornet rated the course "average" in terms of difficulty, noting it has hills and flats but is also at elevation.

That seven girls ran sub-19 minutes was indicative of the class in the field, he said.

"Nevina ran a great race," said Cornet. "She went out aggressively with the leaders and wasn't going to let them take it over. Then she battled through that middle mile. The racing conditions were perfect."

Summit's Hannah Gindlesperger won in 17:46.7. She was followed by teammate Olivia Brooks in 18:25.7.

The senior Croy, the lone Challenger competing, improved her personal best as well. It was 18:59, set in the first meet this season.

While De Luca toppled one record, one of hers fell. The Pirates' Danielle Jantzer set the freshman school mark in 19:58.3, besting the 20:00 De Luca ran in her final meet of 2011.
