Crusader girls rout Pirates in Dist. 6 play

TALENT — Anna Thorndike got St. Mary's on the scoreboard first against Phoenix, then went about helping her teammates in the District 6 girls soccer match Tuesday at Hagler-James Field.

Thorndike scored off an assist from Hannah Norton in the fourth minute, then tacked on three assists as the Crusaders cruised to a 6-0 win over the Pirates (0-4, 0-4 Dist. 6).

Mackenzie Krieser made Phoenix pay for a defensive mistake in the 18th minute, breaking free for a one-on-one against goalkeeper Kourtney Scoggins and finding the net.

Sarah Seus capped the first-half scoring in the 40th minute off a Thorndike assist, and Abby Steinsiek scored off another Thorndike assist to open the scoring in the second half in the 55th minute.

Seus, who had a stellar game in her own right, tallied again in the 69th minute on a pass from Thorndike to make it 5-0, and Gina Barbieri closed out the scoring in the 74th minute off an assist by Seus.

Barbieri and Charis Darnall combined on the shutout in goal for the Crusaders (4-0-1, 4-0).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 7, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Cave Junction, Kaitlyn Emard, Carly Smith and Brooke Barlow scored two goals apiece in leading Cascade Christian to the District 6 triumph.

Molly Kautz also scored for the Challengers, who improved to 3-1 in conference and overall.

Jenna George made two saves for Cascade Christian, which led 2-0 at halftime.

HIDDEN VALLEY 7, ROGUE RIVER 2 — At Rogue River, Stephanie Carter and Katie Figoni each scored two goals to lead visiting Hidden Valley to the District 6 victory.

Kendra Milligan scored in the 19th minute on an assist by Allison Coulter and Jessa Fricke added a goal in the 62nd minute for Rogue River (1-3). Teammate Brittany Coulter recorded 17 saves.

Skyline Boys Soccer

HENLEY 5, NORTH VALLEY 3, OT — At Merlin, North Valley scored late in regulation to tie the match, but Henley answered with two goals in overtime.

Zane Willing scored the match-tying goal for the Knights in the 72nd minute.

Matthew Wessels tallied twice for North Valley (0-4, 0-3 Skyline).

Knights goalie Kristofer Wessels recorded 12 saves.

District 3 Boys Soccer

ST. MARY'S 8, GLIDE 2 — Poncho Aruno recorded a hat trick and teammate Reid Arne added a goal and three assists to guide host St. Mary's to the District 3 win.

Lou Arne, Garrett Coughlin, Joe Delgato and Davis Darnall also scored for the Crusaders (3-1, 2-1 District 3).

Nonconference Boys Soccer

PHOENIX 5, ASHLAND 0 — After a scoreless first half, Phoenix broke the game open in the second half at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Junior forward Jalisco Macias had three assists for the Class 4A second-ranked Pirates (6-0)

Chris Solis scored the first of two goals in the 49th minute, then Omar Iboa tallied two minutes later. Macias assisted on both goals.

Solis scored again on an assist from the sophomore midfielder Iboa about 20 minutes into the second half.

Daniel Katyama and Jonathon Hernandez completed the scoring, with assists going to Luis Rocha and Macias.

Carlos Mena made five saves in net for the Pirates.

DEL NORTE 1, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 — At Murphy, the visitors from Crescent City, Calif., capitalized on a defensive breakdown for the game's only goal at the 68th minute.

Hidden Valley (2-2, 2-0 Skyline) controlled much of the possession but couldn't finish.

Mustangs coach Tim Hannah said junior sweeper Jason Kellogg was very active for his team but left the game with a head injury with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the second half and didn't return.

Caleb Aldstadt, a junior goalkeeper, had five saves for Hidden Valley, which outshot Del Norte, 18-9.

MAZAMA 10, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Klamath Falls, Jovany Sanchez scored in the 55th minute to cut Illinois Valley's deficit to 3-1 before the floodgates opened in the nonleague game.

Led by Darwin Partida's four goals, Mazama scored seven times in the final 20 minutes against the short-handed Cougars, who had only 11 players make the trip because of illness.
