Crater hinders own cause in tourney loss

FRESNO, Calif. — Missed opportunities and defensive miscues paved the way for a third straight loss for Crater in the 41st annual Easter Baseball Classic on Tuesday.

A first-inning error opened the door for three Sunnyside runs and the Fresno-based school went on to a 6-3 victory over the visiting Comets in the 36-team tournament.

Crater (3-5) managed five hits but missed out on several scoring opportunities in the contest.

"We left a lot of runners in scoring positions and just didn't come through with a hit when we needed to," said Crater head coach Jay Campbell. "We had opportunities early in the game to put some runs up but we left runners at second and third. We need to do a better job of taking care of that."

Christian Massey supplied a two-run double in the third inning to pull Crater within one run at 3-2, and Mike Macuk's groundout to shortstop plated Daniel Hill in the sixth for the Comets' only other run.

Bryce Crawford struck out six in five innings in taking the loss on the mound.

After twice committing four errors in Monday's games, the Comets had two errors Tuesday.
