Crater has four champs, wins tourney

CENTRAL POINT — Without the presence of wrestling power Roseburg, the 19th edition of the Crater Classic was up for grabs Saturday.

And the host wasted little time claiming it.

Crater crowned four champions, four runners-up and scored 241.5 points to take first place. Culver was second with 204 points and West Linn third with 178.5.

Roseburg, which had won the three previous titles, was originally scheduled to participate but elected to take the weekend off.

Tyler Montague led the Comets' charge, winning at 119 pounds over returning state champion Jared Kasch of Class 2A/1A Culver, 8-4.

Crater's other winners were Skyler Prislac at 130, Mike Macuk at 135 and Brandon Montague at 145.

Four Comets lost in the finals. Taking second were Kody Gray (140), Davey McCollum (160), Chance Fahndrich (171) and Ed Duran (189).

"It was nice to have our young kids have an opportunity to wrestle and show what they could do," said Crater coach Greg Haga.

Tyler Montague, a sophomore, was particularly impressive. Kasch won state at 103 pounds last year as a freshman.

"It was a good win for him," said Haga. "He had a good, solid performance. He controlled the whole match, except for the first five seconds. He tried a head-and-arm at the beginning and didn't get it. After that, he was real solid all the way through and dominated the match."

Prislac pinned Cameron Coats of Enterprise, Calif., at 1:14 of the finals. Macuk recorded a 13-10 decision over Brandon Krellwitz of West Linn, and Brandon Montague decisioned Miguel Gutierrez of Culver, 12-9.

TEAM SCORES — Crater 241.5, Culver 204, West Linn 178.5, Westview 155.5, Clackamas 152, Enterprise (Calif.) 62.5.

Swimming

ALL SKYLINE MEET — At Ashland, the Phoenix boys and girls captured the team titles in the conference six-team event at the Southern Oregon University pool.

The Phoenix boys won the meet for the 10th consecutive year, while the Pirate girls ended Henley's five-year run as the team champion.

Juniors Jeoff Underwood and Jarred Richards excelled for the Pirate boys, who scored 106 points to 60 for runner-up Hidden Valley.

Underwood and Richards each won two individual events in personal-best times. Underwood's winning time (2:09.07) in the 200 individual medley set a meet record. The pair also swam a leg on two winning relays.

In girls, Phoenix had 78 points, while Hidden Valley finished second (75) and Henley was third (68). Hidden Valley won two relays and had two individual winners, but Phoenix's depth proved to be the difference.

The Pirates' only victories came from Olivia Sanchez (500 freestyle) and Gabe Deen (100 backstroke).
