Crater clubs Thurston for sweep

SPRINGFIELD — Crater was steady at the plate with a combined 21 hits in 6-1 and 9-4 baseball wins over Thurston in a doubleheader Saturday to remain unbeaten in Midwestern League play.

The Comets used a two-run home run by senior Jace Godley in the fifth inning of Game 1 to separate from the host Colts, then got a spark from senior Sebasten Boivin with a leadoff homer in the second inning of Game 2 en route to a key four-run swing.

“We had some good at-bats today and throughout the lineup we were able to string hits together when we needed to,” said Crater head coach Jay Campbell.

Senior Jacob Swartwout allowed two hits with three strikeouts and three walks in five innings to pick up the opening win, with Matthew Croft tossing two innings of hitless relief for the Comets (13-1, 9-0 MWL).

In Game 2, Boivin allowed eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings, with Croft again coming in to shut the door in relief.

Jake Cartwright was a combined 6-for-7 with three runs and two RBIs, and Sean Bartlett was 5-for-8 with three runs and two RBIs to help pace the Comets.

Godley finished 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs and Larson Kindreich 2-for-4 with one run in the opener, while Nick Bastendorff was 2-for-5 with one run and two RBIs in Game 2.

ASHLAND 7-9, NORTH EUGENE 4-3: At Ashland, Jesse Carroll combined to go 4-for-5 with four runs and five RBIs for Ashland and picked up the win in Game 2 after striking out nine with two walks and seven hits allowed in 6⅓ innings of the Midwestern League doubleheader.

Kellar Edwards was 4-for-4 and Shae Scott 3-for-4 in the opener for Ashland (8-4, 5-4 MWL), which scored five unanswered runs to close out North Eugene (1-13, 0-9).

In Game 2, Carroll was 3-for-3 and had a two-run triple in the first inning while Evan McLennan was 2-for-2 with a two-run double in the fourth.

CHURCHILL 4-9, EAGLE POINT 1-4: At Eagle Point, host Eagle Point was unable to solve Churchill ace Jose Chavez, who hurled a two-hitter in the opener en route to a Lancers sweep.

The Eagles (6-7, 4-5 MWL) got their lone run when Tanner Jostad scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth. Chavez polished off the complete game by striking out the side in order in the seventh.

In the nightcap, the Lancers tallied four runs in the fourth inning to pull away from the Eagles.

Coldin Shopp finished 3-for-4 and scored twice, Nate Page went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Dylan Marsh added an RBI double.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 7-11, LAKEVIEW 2-1: At Lakeview, Cascade Christian rapped 25 hits in the Southern Cascade League twin bill.

In Game 1, Declan Payne had two doubles and an RBI for Cascade Christian, and Cade Wager, Gunnar Thompson and Jack West each added two hits and an RBI to back a three-hitter by Jeff Letendre.

Letendre had six strikeouts and no walks for the Challengers (7-6, 3-0 SCL).

In the five-inning nightcap, Kyle Reece went 3-for-4 for Cascade Christian. Wager, Thompson, Letendre and Payne each had two hits.

ST. MARY’S 17-13, ROGUE RIVER 0-2: St. Mary’s Joe Johnson nearly threw a perfect game and Travis Danielson launched two home runs in the opener of a Southern Cascade League sweep.

Johnson’s lone blemish was a two-out bunt single by Rogue River (2-7, 0-2 SCL) in the top of the fourth inning. He struck out 12 and did not issue a walk.

Johnson also went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Danielson hit a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run homer in the second.

Ben Robinson finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a three-run triple in the fourth inning for the Crusaders (8-3, 3-0 SCL), who received a two-run homer from Daniel LaFond.

In Game 2, Brandon Letendre improved to 5-0 for the Crusaders, allowing two runs — one earned — on three hits to go with six strikeouts.

Robinson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Bryce Bramscher added a two-run triple for St. Mary’s.

Jacob Tambellini went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles for the Chieftains.
