Crater boys, girls shine at Umpqua Invite

ROSEBURG — The Crater boys and girls cross country teams both took home first place at the Umpqua Invite at Stewart Park on Wednesday.

The Comets cruised past Grants Pass for the title on the girls side, while the boys outdid Roseburg by eight points.

Crater junior Jon Obeso covered the 5,000-meter course in 15:58.78 to capture the boys individual title.

Daniel Stober (16:12.52) took second for the Comets.

On the girls side, Crater freshman Gracie Tostenson ran the race in 18:59.84 to secure first place.

Crater's Britney Wimberly (19:37.84) was third. Grants Pass' Katie Jenista (19:42.68) and Kara Rawlings (19:46.77) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

SOUTH SWEEPS MEET — At Stewart State Park, South Medford's Ryan Perry won the boys race and Stefanee Tolner claimed the girls race in leading the Panthers to victory in a conference meet that included North Medford and Class 5A Eagle Point.

Perry beat out North Medford's Stetson Smith for first place, with South Medford claiming spot Nos. 3-5 thanks to efforts by David Huddleston, Nick Shanklin and Travis Jantzer, respectively. North's Blake Spencer finished sixth.

The Panther boys finished with 20 points, followed by North Medford (41) and Eagle Point (85).

In the girls competition, South Medford scored 15 points to North Medford's 48. The Panthers swept the top five spots with, in order, Tolner, Blair Shanklin, Carmen Mejia, Stephani Ritter and Kayla Parsons. North Medford's Julia Ribeiro was sixth.

Several of the Black Tornado's top runners were held out of the meet.
