Cowden pushes Mustangs to victory

RENO, Nev. — Tate Cowden sent home the winning run with a well-placed bunt in the top of the sixth inning as the Medford Mustangs completed its rally for a 4-3 American Legion AAA baseball victory over the Sierra Sun Devils in the Josh Anderson Memorial Tournament at Wooster High School on Thursday.

Cowden’s bunt scored Justin Geyer after Nick Sanderson’s run-scoring single knotted the score at 3-all in the fifth inning for the Mustangs (12-4), who next square off with Santa Clara at 4:30 p.m. today. Pool play wraps up Saturday before the event concludes with placement games Sunday.

After pitching five innings, Sanderson handed the ball off to Jacob Melton in the sixth, who retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to record the save for the Mustangs.

Cole Carder finished 3-for-4 with a triple for the Mustangs and Melton was 2-for-4.

NORTH MEDFORD 13, SHELDON 6, 6 inn.: At Eugene, Quinton Rumrey belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning as North Medford put away Sheldon in the second day of the Best of the West Tournament.

The Mavericks (8-4), who claimed the victory via the event’s seven-run mercy rule, continue the tournament against Marist at 2 p.m. today.

Rumrey finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Brandon King went 2-for-5 and drove in four runs and Zack Collins went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for North Medford.

SOUTH MEDFORD 16, SOUTH UMPQUA 2, 7 inn.: South Medford scored eight runs in the sixth inning and needed just seven innings to get the win via 10-run mercy rule over South Umpqua at South Medford High.

Steven Ledendecker went 3-for-3, drove in a pair of runs and scored three times for the Panthers (7-2), who were scheduled to play a nine-inning game. Robby Carle finished 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI and Clint Campbell was 2-for-4.

GWL Baseball

MEDFORD ROGUES 10, CHICO HEAT 7: At Chico, Calif., Medford erased an early deficit with a five-run sixth inning and prevailed for the Great West League victory.

Chico (13-9) didn’t make the win easy for the Rogues (16-6), however, after scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth and loading the bases with two outs before relief pitcher Taylor Frost was able to escape the jam and get the save.

The Rogues’ Jake Hellweg and Eric Yang each had RBI singles in the sixth inning, while Josh Berman and Scotty Wright each scored on an error.

Davis Delorefice drove in three runs and finished 3-for-5, and Hellweg was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Rogues. Jayden Hanna went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Wright was 2-for-3 with two runs and Berman was 2-for-4.
