KLAMATH FALLS — Phoenix goalkeeper Giovanni Cook did his part in the Pirates’ 1-0 Skyline Conference boys soccer win over Mazama Thursday — at both ends of the field.
In addition to being credited with the shutout in goal, the senior Cook recorded an assist on the game’s lone score.
In the 45th minute, he punted the ball all the way to the 25-yard line, where junior forward Bryson Flenner corralled it, dribbled through two defenders and finished form 10 yards out.
Phoenix (3-1-2, 3-1 Skyline) out-shot the Vikings (3-3, 1-3), 14-7, and Mazama led in corner kicks, 5-2.
The Pirates got strong play from their two captains, junior defender Joe Navas and senior midfielder Kassem Akil.
NORTH MEDFORD 2, ASHLAND 2: Ian Rinefort’s header off a corner kick tied the game in the final seconds as visiting Ashland overcame a 2-0 second-half deficit in the nonleague match.
The Black Tornado (3-2-2) scored in the 11th minute on a strike by Caleb Forte and added an insurance goal two minutes into the second half on a scramble in the box.
The Grizzlies (5-1-2) halved the lead in the 52nd. Scott Gustafson drove a free kick into the box to Declan Hinkley, who headed it across the goal mouth to Jade Boucher, who chested it to Rinefort. Rinefort’s header flashed toward the left post, where Ben Lucero one-touched it in for the goal.
Ashland tied the game with six seconds remaining when Jahnoi Hall delivered a perfect corner kick 5 yards beyond the far post, where Rinefort came through with a header into the corner.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2, CRATER 0: Kyle Reece scored both Cascade Christian goals as the Challengers held off Crater in a nonconference match at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Both of Reece’s goals came late in each half — 37th and 78th minutes — with assists coming from Kevin Wayda and Nick Erno, respectively.
The Challengers (4-2) controlled the ball for most of the match and received excellent defensive backline play from Jeffrey Fairbanks, Gabe Vidlack and Levi Ellerbeck to contribute in the shutout.
MAZAMA 4, PHOENIX 0: At Talent, Phoenix missed on its opportunities and Mazama capitalized in the second half to claim the Skyline Conference victory at Colver Field.
The Pirates (2-5, 0-4 Sky), who were in a scoreless stalemate at halftime, weren’t able to connect in the second half despite out-shooting the Vikings.
