Comets send seven into Classic quarters

NORTH BEND — Seven Crater wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals on the opening day of the prestigious North Bend Coast Classic Friday, setting up the Comets for a potentially big finish today.

Crater is tied for second place with Crook County with 73 points, one point behind defending champion Roseburg. The Comets were third last year after putting six in the quarters.

North Medford, with five in the quarters, also cracked the top 10, tying Crescent Valley for that spot with 41.5 points.

Logan Meek, one of two top seeds for Crater, led the way with first-round pins in his two matches at 160 pounds, winning in 1:24 and 1:13. Crater’s other No. 1 seed, Zeth Brower at 120, had an opening bye, then a first-round fall.

Crater’s other quarterfinalists are Tanner Ulrey (113), Angel Diaz (126), Isaiah Griffith (138), Dallas Howard (152) and Tony Flores (195).

North Medford’s highest seed, No. 2 Julian Stone at 220, won his lone match by fall in 1:29. He had an opening bye. His teammates in the quarters are Enrique Jaime (126), Matthew Bryant (145), Andrea Ramirez (170) and Joshua Robbins (285).

Grants Pass advanced Vincent Washington (145) and Peter Osipovich (220).

Moving on for Eagle Point were Freddy Barajas (106) and Thomas Zomerdyk (113).

Cascade Christian’s Vidlak brothers, Ryan (106) and Gabe (113), are each No. 3 seeds and each made the quarters with a pair of pins.

ASHLAND FIRST, SECOND: At Coos Bay, Ashland’s boys won a four-way meet and its girls were second at Mingus Park Pool. The other schools were Crater, Marshfield and Reedsport.

For the Grizzly boys, Chris Frownfelter won the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.82) and 100 backstroke (1:02.48). Baylor Wiggins had a first (50 freestyle, 24.69) and second (100 free, 55.02).

Other seconds were by Hunter Oliver (200 free, 2:04.93; 100 back, 1:02.88), Ziji Donahoo (200 IM, 2:25.65) and Rileigh Orr (500 free, 6:01.64).

Crater’s top efforts were Cordell Vaught (100 free, 1:07.89) and Abrahm Rogney (200 free, 2:13.48).

On the girls side, Ashland’s Rachel Kahane was first in the 100 butterfly (1:21.58) and second in the 50 free (31.42), Elizabeth Delange second in the (100 free, 1:17.47) and Alex Westrick second in the 100 fly (1:24.23).

For Crater, leaders were Abby Zolkoske (100 back, 1:19.13; 200 free 2:25.07), Alexis Harbour (100 back, 1:19.94; 100 breaststroke, 1:28.30) and McKenna Gugliotta (100 free, 1:18.09).

BOYS TEAM SCORES: Ashland 148, Marshfield 144, Crater 27, Reedsport 3.

GIRLS TEAM SCORES: Marshfield 165, Ashland 117, Crater 45, Reedsport 3.
