Challengers stun Hidden Valley

MURPHY — Before this season, it had been a long time since the Cascade Christian football team had felt the sting of a losing record.

And after a deflating 46-7 loss to Santiam Christian last week, when they also lost star running back Tyler Stickler to a concussion, the Challengers were in need of a pick-me-up.

In his first start, Brandon Williams turned up his intensity and scored the go-ahead touchdown that gave the Challengers a 21-18 victory over undefeated Hidden Valley on Friday.

"It was a huge win for us after coming off a disappointing 46-7 loss," said Challengers coach Jon Gettman. "All week at practice we emphasized how we needed to work through adversity."

With eight minutes remaining, Williams, filling in for Stickler, hauled in a pass from Daniel Scottow, broke two tackles, eluded the Mustangs' safety and streaked down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown.

Hidden Valley (3-1) had a chance to take the lead when it used the ground game to drive down to the Challengers' 21-yard line. But right after picking up a first down, Cascade Christian's Mason Smith undercut the intended receiver's route and came up with an interception with 4:44 left at the Challengers' 5-yard line.

"They were moving the ball and marching and I don't think we would have been able to stop them," said Gettman. "Somebody needed to make a play. (The wide receiver) tried making a double move on him (Smith) and he made a good play to preserve the win."

The Challengers later converted on a fourth-and-two play with 2:12 remaining to seal the win.

Tyler Beard rushed 19 times for 121 yards and a touchdown. Williams ran eight times for 73 yards.

Kaleb Krauss ran for 107 yards on 17 attempts and threw for 108 yards and a touchdown.

D.J. Morse had 24 carries for 117 yards for the Mustangs, who accumulated 252 yards on the ground.
