Challengers fall in 3A state quarterfinals

COOS BAY — Zach Baugher scored a game-high 17 points, including a clutch 3-pointer with 41 seconds to go, and Santiam Christian held on for a 45-41 victory over Cascade Christian in the Class 3A boys basketball state quarterfinals Thursday at Marshfield High School.

Cascade Christian rallied from an early six-point deficit to take a 25-22 lead into halftime and went ahead 38-36 on Tyler Cochran’s layup with 4 minutes, 2 seconds left. But the Challengers were held scoreless over the next three minutes.

The Challengers still had a chance to tie or take the lead after Santiam Christian’s Grant Carley missed the front end of a one-and-one with 19 seconds left, but Cochran and Joel McLemore missed 3-pointers on the ensuing possession, and Santiam Christian’s Zeke Gilbert iced the game at the free throw line with three seconds left.

The loss dropped the Challengers (18-9) into the consolation bracket of the eight-team tournament, where they will face Oregon Episcopal today at 10:45 a.m. at North Bend High. The winner of that game will advance to the fourth-place game.

Santiam Christian (22-5) will play Dayton in the semifinals.

McLemore had 14 points and four rebounds to lead Cascade Christian, which also lost to the Eagles 52-48 on Dec. 22. Ben Dunn added 10 points and nine boards and Cristian Flores Alatorre seven points and seven boards.

Baugher had nine rebounds to go with his scoring output, which included an 11-point opening quarter. Carley added 12 points and four assists and Josh Baugher nine points and four boards before fouling out.

After a slow start the Challengers scored nine straight points capped by a Cochran jumper to turn a 14-10 deficit into a 19-14 lead.

Santiam Christian tied the game at 22 on a Zach Baugher 3, and Cascade Christian answered with a McLemore 3 with 34 seconds to go.

Back-to-back layups by McLemore gave Cascade Christian its largest lead of the second half, 32-27, midway through the third quarter. Three minutes later, Josh Baugher was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws, and Carley scored inside with 25 seconds left in the period to tie the game.
