Cascade Christian pitchers Justin Cheney and Isaiah Luzny combined to allow just one man on base and overpowered Umpqua Valley Christian from the beginning Friday.
Cheney went four innings without surrendering a run in his first start of the season and Luzny cemented the five-inning, 10-0 rout at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
The game lasted just five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. The winning run was scored in the bottom of the fifth on a throwing error by the UVC third baseman, which allowed Andrew Sha and Josh Brite to cross home for the Challengers (5-1).
"For them to not walk any hitters this early in the season is very good," said Cascade Christian coach John Bruce of his pitching duo.
"In his first start, (Cheney) looked really good. He was keeping the ball down, staying ahead of hitters and stayed ahead in the count."
Cheney threw no-hit ball through the first four innings and struck out eight. Luzny allowed a double to UVC's David Tilton, the first batter he faced in the fifth inning. Luzny, however, stranded Tilton by retiring the next three at the plate, two on strikeouts.
Luzny was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs for the Challengers, who took advantage of five errors and seven walks surrendered by the Monarchs.
