CORVALLIS — Crater sophomore Haley Brown placed fifth overall at the Class 5A girls golf state championships, leading the Comets to a third-place tie in the team standings Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

Brown shot a 10-over-par 82 for the second consecutive day to wrap up the two-day event with a 164, one stroke behind fourth-place finisher Megan George of Pendleton and six strokes better than sixth-place finisher Kaylie Hayes of Bend.

Brown got off to a great start with four consecutive pars before bogeying the fifth and shooting a 4-over 7 on the 125-yard par-3 sixth hole. She rebounded nicely, however, by making birdie on the 10th hole en route to a strong back nine that also included four pars.
